How to manage users and roles in Carta loan ops
Carta Loan Operations uses four organization-wide roles to control what each user can see and do. Owners and Admins can invite and manage users. Navigate to People in the left navigation to access user management.
Understanding user roles
- Owner: Full access, including user management. The Owner is the primary account holder for your firm.
- Admin: Full access, but cannot create other Admin accounts or change existing Admin role assignments.
- Editor: Can add and update most loan data, including loans, advances, fees, and amendments. Restricted from security-sensitive actions such as adding or connecting bank accounts.
- Read-only: Can view the loan portfolio and payment schedule but cannot make changes.
How to invite a user
Navigate to People → Users in the left navigation.
Select Add User.
Enter the user's name, email address, and role.
Select Save. The user receives an email invitation to activate their account.
How to edit or deactivate a user
To edit a user's name, email, or role:
Navigate to People → Users.
Select the pencil icon next to the user.
Update their details and select Save.
To deactivate a user (Owner role required):
Select the archive icon next to the user's profile.
Select Deactivate in the confirmation dialog. The user's access is removed immediately.
To reactivate a deactivated user:
Select the unarchive icon next to the deactivated user.
Select Reactivate. The user receives an email notification.
How to manage permission sets
Permission sets are reusable role templates you can apply to specific loans. They give you control beyond organization-wide roles, such as blocking access to a specific loan for users who can otherwise see the portfolio.
To create a permission set:
Navigate to People → Permission Sets.
Select Create Permission Set and enter a name.
Drag users between role columns (Owners, Admins, Editors, Viewers, No Access) to assign their role within this template.
Select Save.
To apply a permission set to a loan:
Navigate to the loan and select the Permissions tab.
Select the pencil icon next to Permissions.
Select a permission set from the dropdown.
Optionally override individual user roles for this specific loan.
Select Save.
