How to create and manage custom fields for securities

Custom fields let company admins track security-specific metadata that isn't captured by Carta's default fields. Once created, a custom field appears on individual securities of the selected types, both in the security details and while drafting or issuing new securities.

How to create a custom field

  1. Navigate to Essentials → Issue equity

  2. Click Manage under Vesting and securities templates

  3. Click into the Custom fields tab

  4. Click Create custom field

  1. Enter a Field name, this is the label that will appear on the security

  2. Optionally, enter a Default value. If provided, this value will pre-populate the field on new securities, though it can be changed during drafting.

    • If you want this field to appear on securities already on your cap table (not just new ones issued going forward), check the box next to Add this field to existing securities

  3. Set the Visibility

  4. Select which Security types the field should apply to. You can select one or more types

  5. Click Create field to save.

If the box was checked to add the field to existing securities, it will automatically appear in the Additional details section of the security details modal.

If not, you can apply the field while drafting new securities. After drafting the new security the field will show in Additional details section of the security details modal.

How to edit a custom field

  1. Navigate to Essentials → Issue equity → click Manage under Vesting and securities templates.

  2. Click into the Custom fields tab, then click Edit

  3. Make the updates, then click Save changes to finalize.
